The large project team had worked together to revitalise this building and area of the city.

Judges comments

This project transformed a group of old industrial buildings in the heart of Wellington into a state of the art office environment. The buildings were stripped right back to their frames, carving out an atrium, strengthening and adding extra floor space. The buildings were knitted together into a cohesive whole with big open floor plates, despite multiple mismatched floor levels. The result is a delightful and characterful workplace, which anticipates achieving a 5 Green star rating.

This is a quintessential story about taking a building that had its origins in the 80's and pulling it kicking and screaming into 2017. 8 Nelson Street has been architecturally and structurally upgraded with sleek new cladding, stainless steel downpipes and glazed canopy. It somewhat overshadows the extensive and complex strengthening that lies beyond.
