Judges’ comments

Working in an operating school was never going to be straightforward, even more so when the project was an infill, connecting to two existing buildings one of which required substantial underpinning. The team from Field and Hall worked closely with the school however to ensure that disruption was minimal, and the project was delivered to programme.

This major, four storey building provides state of the art facilities for the performing and creative arts, an area of strength for the school. It does so however in a way that links adjacent buildings both physically and stylistically, the understated result a credit to the design teams, particularly from Athfield Architects and engineers Clendon Burns and Park.

Judges’ comments

This simple, tunnel shaped building houses practice nets for Scots cricket teams, but also acts as a multipurpose indoor sports facility. The clear polycarbonate roof is formed over curved LVL portals. Natural lighting through this roof is so good that supplementary lighting is seldom needed during the day.

Sometimes a simple idea can be very difficult to realize, but in this case the design and construction teams deftly negotiated the potential pitfalls to deliver a result that exceeds all expectations.

Judges’ comments

A cinema complex built in the 1980s has been gutted and transformed into cooking schools for Weltec and Le Cordon Bleu. Extensive demolition allowed two extra floors to be inserted, for a finished facility housing 7 teaching kitchens, a restaurant and many other back-of-house and student facilities.

This was all accomplished on a site with 100% site coverage, fronting on to two busy streets. The project was completed on time despite a multitude of challenges, not the least being an evolving brief and a need for substantial value engineering as the project progressed.

Judges’ comments

The Judges were impressed with the quality and the significant attention to detail, both design and Construction detail, for this Special Needs Facility School. This was purpose-designed to meet the special needs of students aged from 6 years to 21 years . It comprises classrooms, a music room, a hydrotherapy pool, a sensory room , a multi purpose room and sensory garden with courtyards adjacent to each room and administration rooms and offices.

The school has been designed to meet the needs of 5 star green rating and has already received 2 separate Architectural awards. Maycroft Construction has achieved a very high standard of workmanship and attention to the unique requirements for this build and it is pleasing to observe these students enjoying this fine amenity.

Judges’ comments

This major project linked two existing buildings at the medical school with a multistorey atrium and new lecture theatres. Buried beneath this is a large plant facility serving the medical school, and pumping electricity into the national grid at times of peak demand.

Clever detailing by the Jasmax-lead design team, well executed by Fletcher Construction and a large team of subcontractors provides a high and robust standard of finish throughout, and creates a new heart for the school with its impressive light-filled atrium.
