Judges’ comments

The family owners of Rippon vineyard have become increasingly focused in recent years on a bio-dynamic approach to winemaking, working in harmony with the natural environment. They brought this philosophy to the Rippon Hall, which was many years in conception. The Hall sits on a knoll in the vineyard, with magnificent views out over the lake at the foot of the property, and houses a wine tasting and sales area, along with a flexible conference centre.

It is built largely from rammed earth from the site, and larch timberwork also milled on site.

Architect Rafe Maclean and the Amalgamated Builders team have realised the owners’ vision magnificently, creating a building with a truly timeless quality.

Judges’ comments

This Project consisted of building an aviation display hall on a former landfill site. The floor area is 3300m2 with large 42m spans at a height of 16m. 12.0m long piles were put down to the basalt layer through the old landfill and a below ground gas collection installed. A post tensioned floor slab was used for the main floor.

The large roof trusses were made of laminated veneer lumber and the roof was preassembled on the ground in 2 sections . Each lift was carried out using 4 no 100 tonne cranes . The use of a large volume low velocity air displacement passive design strategy was employed for ventilating the building . The rainwater is collected for use in the building also .

Careful detailed planning was undertaken by NZ Strong to preassemble as much as possible at ground level . This enabled better efficiency and avoided considerable work at height. A very good H&S performance was achieved on this Project . The Project was completed on time and under budget. The client is very pleased with the outcome and quality of the overall Project.

Judges’ comments

A reimagination of the inter-war picture palace, with all of the glamour but none of the fleas” was the aim of a group from Wellington’s film industry, when they took on restoration of the old Capitol cinema in Miramar. The project soon turned into a complete rebuild behind the original façade, which was skillfully carried out by Peter Camp Builders.

A major construction project like this in a small suburban shopping centre could have been very disruptive, but good communication saw the project team stay onside with the local community throughout. The Roxy is now the pride and joy of Miramar.

Judges’ comments

A long thin site between the running track and the cricket oval dictated a long thin building. The needs of the two sporting codes dictated a multipurpose facility, fronting both ways. And a modest budget meant that it had to be efficient.

These constraints could have conspired to deliver a pedestrian solution. Instead, the Arthouse Architecture design team conceived an inspirational building, which an enthusiastic team from Scott Construction has delivered to the delight of its many community users.

Q Theatre, Auckland

Q Theatre Trust

Judges’ comments

Q theatre is a modern performing arts centre formed with a new build 4 storey theatre structure integrated with an existing 1920s Queen St Building. This was a constrained site which required very careful planning for the new build and also for the seismic strengthening of the old 1920s building which was in a delicate structural state. Naylor Love held regular workshops with all the consultant teams to enable the best solutions to be employed for each element of the complex build.

The project was completed in 20 months, on time and on budget with a very good H&S performance. The Q Theatre Trust client is justifiably very proud of this new fine facility.

These constraints could have conspired to deliver a pedestrian solution. Instead, the Arthouse Architecture design team conceived an inspirational building, which an enthusiastic team from Scott Construction has delivered to the delight of its many community users.
