Judges’ comments

A superb result was achieved in extremely challenging conditions – an outside wall was removed and the building extended, a floor was gutted and turned into wards whilst 17 operating theatres on each of the floors above and below continued to function. To complicate the Project further the need arose early on to incorporate major construction changes imposed by the new earthquake designs incorporating the IL4 Code requirements.
The fact that the results are almost invisible is testament to the meticulous planning and tremendous teamwork of all involved. The Project was still completed on time despite these significant variations.

Judges’ comments

This project is exceptionally successful in catering for a diverse range of Levin residents – from the senior citizens at one end, motoring in to the large print book section from the mall on their mobility scooters, to the group taking computer classes in the middle, to the teenagers playing table tennis with an elderly mentor at the other end. This is an inspiring model of what a community facility can be in the 21st century. The vibrancy of this Community Centre has been achieved by quality of workmanship and functional design and inspiring leadership responding to the community needs.
