Having outgrown the existing facility, the new building has the largest seismic testing capabilities in Australasia. Part of the wider university site, a previously commercial site has been transformed into a learning hub for the future.

Judges Comments


This deceptively simple building form houses large-scale testing facilities, together with academic research and office spaces with state-of-the-art features including solar chimneys for natural ventilation.

 

Several innovative construction solutions were the product of an extraordinarily close and positive relationship within the extended client/builder/consultant team.

On a site dominated by two notable and protected trees the design was to not only conserve these trees, but to make them an integral feature by building the centre in a crescent moon) shape with 31 radiating gridlines – the apex being a point between the two trees.

Comprising three inter-connected buildings of new teaching space that are each distinctly different but are generally of three storeys, with roof top plant space and a single level basement located in the central building.

Having lost 80% of its facilities during the earthquake, the decision was made to rebuild the gymnasium, chapel, music classrooms and associated facilities together in one building.  The 700 seat chapel can also double as a functional theatre. The gym is structured around a two-storey spine of  support spaces naturally lit by high level clerestory glazing.

Preserving the heritage of the six storey building after it sustained serious damage in the earthquakes while maintaining the formidable Brutalist architecture was paramount.  Adding a complete internal refit gave the building a vibrant new look.
