A distinctive ‘saw tooth’ roofline, implemented to improve the efficiency of the rooftop solar array, the three level building with a carpark on level  one above the ground floor treatment spaces, provides specialist radiotherapy services to the people of the Bay of Plenty.

Judges Comments

Recognised internationally as being a leading edge complex, this unique public - private partnership required a client with vision and a project team that pushed boundaries and tackled the unknowns such as creating the 'Radiotherapy Bunker' where special state-of-the-art equipment is located.

'Green Walls' and sensitive interior spaces encapsulate a unique number of sustainable features and elements throughout the building. This is a unique health-focused facility of which the total team can feel justly proud.

With the Child Cancer Foundation building the residential unit on the back to sell to help fund the building of the new facility, the 2 two storey buildings provide a place for children and their families receiving treatment at Christchurch Hospital.

Designed to have the effect of a free-standing pavilion suspended and floating in the landscape,  the new state of the art, bespoke architecturally designed Medical Centre includes basement car parking, three levels of combined medical theatres, recovery and consultation rooms.

With the existing hospital already working at full capacity in terms of facilities and space, a complex mix of hospital operational, logistical and construction challenges were overcome while remaining fully functional during the extensions and upgrade.

Located in the heritage character area of Newtown and designed to mimic the existing street texture, the three level centre was developed by a group of medical specialists to provide a modern facility for patient consultations and surgical procedures.
