Taking over 12 months to complete the extensive and careful internal deconstruction of all heritage items was done before any works commenced.  The challenge was restoring the original features of the Victorian Gothic-style building, while making sure it had all the necessary services.

With a limited building footprint and a design brief to retain as much of the original character that is BATS, the new building boasts extensive retro and art deco finishes and comprises three fully reconfigured performing spaces as well as a staff office,  back stage, green room, the Lumen Bar and more.

Following significant earthquake damage to the Church, the construction of a modern replacement that fully retained the interior and remaining timber structure while incorporating earthquake proofing was completed to adopt a resilient new building.

The 1909 Category 1 Heritage building has been returned to form and iconic status with this exemplary restoration project. The flamboyant Edwardian Baroque façade has been restored and repaired with the rest of the building extensively preserved for future generations.

After substantial earthquake strengthening an Italian restaurant adorns the ground floor complete with a purpose built wood fired pizza oven ventilated upwards through 2 stories of accommodation areas used for high end, short term rental.

Recognising a lack of visual appearance and site presence of the 90’s built retail centre, a new façade and colonnade structure was added to the building which included individual tenant requirements, increasing it’s overall scale and identifying it with the main road to create a sense of place and greater custodianship by the tenants and end users.
