A reimagination of the inter-war picture palace, with all of the glamour but none of the fleas” was the aim of a group from Wellington’s film industry, when they took on restoration of the old Capitol cinema in Miramar. The project soon turned into a complete rebuild behind the original façade, which was skillfully carried out by Peter Camp Builders. A major construction project like this in a small suburban shopping centre could have been very disruptive, but good communication saw the project team stay onside with the local community throughout. The Roxy is now the pride and joy of Miramar.
A long thin site between the running track and the cricket oval dictated a long thin building. The needs of the two sporting codes dictated a multipurpose facility, fronting both ways. And a modest budget meant that it had to be efficient. These constraints could have conspired to deliver a pedestrian solution. Instead, the Arthouse Architecture design team conceived an inspirational building, which an enthusiastic team from Scott Construction has delivered to the delight of its many community users.
Q theatre is a modern performing arts centre formed with a new build 4 storey theatre structure integrated with an existing 1920s Queen St Building. This was a constrained site which required very careful planning for the new build and also for the seismic strengthening of the old 1920s building which was in a delicate structural state. Naylor Love held regular workshops with all the consultant teams to enable the best solutions to be employed for each element of the complex build. The project was completed in 20 months, on time and on budget with a very good H&S performance. The Q Theatre Trust client is justifiably very proud of this new fine facility. These constraints could have conspired to deliver a pedestrian solution.
