Judges’ comments
The repair, strengthening and refurbishment of this historic building involved carefully inserting and concealing sizeable structural elements, all whilst keeping the decorative features inside intact. The building also sits within a sensitive landscape, with magnificent trees nearby that required protection.
The finished result gives no hint of the extent of work involved, which is testament to its success. In excess of 200 cubic metres of spoil had to be removed by hand for the new foundations . As building works progressed it was found that the building was not one building but five separate buildings constructed at various times and so all structures and connections required specific structural solutions.
These structural solutions could only be undertaken once areas were opened up and the issues identified . Strowan House consists of 75 various rooms with intricate plaster ceilings and cornices and decorative ceiling roses . These had to be carefully removed and remade. This is a fine example of the restoration of an Historic Building damaged by the Christchurch earthquakes.
