Judges’ comments
An eye catching landmark located near Cambridge this world-class facility and the Home of Cycling will serve as a hub for national track cycling champions as well as being open for sports people of all ages and abilities.
As it’s a large and complex building spanning 77 metres across and 120 metres in length, the challenge for the team was to ensure it didn’t become just another large and obtrusive structure. Therefore the decision to make the arena’s overall shape mimic that of the track brings a hint of what lies within.
Largely funded by the community and with an immovable date for the delivery and installation of the 52,000 metre timber track from Germany, the project team’s obvious commitment to delivering this facility on time and on budget is second to none.
Just the second indoor velodrome to be constructed in New Zealand, the Avantidrome is a fantastic facility for the Waikato community.
