Judges’ comments
Originally built in 1939, and once the biggest office building in Wellington, 15 Stout Street sat empty for years after its government tenants vacated for a more modern space.
But when a canny client saw the potential, and after dynamic testing proved its seismic strength, the project team have delivered an environment consistent with the latest standards in workplace design while at the same time recognizing the special character of the original building.
An internal atrium which is open from the ground floor through to level 8 has transformed the building’s interior. Providing good natural light penetration onto each level and ensuring interconnectivity not only across the building but also vertically between floors is a key to the success of the design. With this composition the project team have produced a building to rival international new build office spaces.
