Judges’ comments
This building delivers a design response that is simple, elegant, and uncompromising on quality, while celebrating the views, sun, and light of its breath-taking position on the water.
Furthermore, the Developers designers and Wellington City Council’s landscape architects all worked together during the early phases of design to ensure the interface between the building and the public spaces merged seamlessly, forming a superb public amenity.
A first in Australasia, the under wharf basement was in principal designed to the New Zealand Code for reservoirs, but in reverse, keeping the water out rather than holding it in. The scope of work included 205 piles, demolition and/or strengthening of the existing wharf with twenty eight individual, 90 ton slabs cast above the level of high tide.
A design, engineering and construction masterpiece, this development is a fantastic enhancement to Wellington’s waterfront.
