This reconstruction project carefully blends the old and new. All existing buildings were replaced, except for the theatre and heritage listed original gallery, which have been fully restored and seismically strengthened. To retain the integrity of the unique gallery floor, it was lifted as one piece before works were carried out on the foundations below.

This intricately designed Community Centre provides a range of spaces for community use, including yoga classes and the Saturday morning market. It was erected on site in just five weeks after the necessary components were manufactured off site and tested in a 1:1 prototype.

By extending out from the existing stadium, the new Walter Nash Centre provides Hutt City with an integrated sports and community venue which boasts a gym and five indoor multi-sport courts, plus a community hall and library. The design was carefully considered to make efficient use of the Council and community’s hard-won funding, both in construction and operation.

The new Environment Canterbury building provides office space for over 450 people as well as council chambers and meeting rooms. With base-isolation, it is constructed to withstand a one in 1000 year earthquake. It also boasts a ground source heat pump, landscaped gardens, dedicated bicycle facilities and is expected to achieve a 4-star green rating.

This multipurpose complex is the new centrepiece of the Halswell Community. The 3000m2 building contains a library, café, hall, lounge, business suite, meeting rooms and council. Outside, the lap pool and hydroslide have been upgraded along with a new BBQ area and landscaping.

The new Te Aroha community events centre includes 14 courts and pitches for various sports, a 150 seat conference centre and an adjoining functions venue. Silver Fern Farms purchased the naming rights in gratitude for the support it received from the local community when the company’s Te Aroha plant was destroyed by fire in 2010.

When this building was first opened in 1957, it was praised as Lower Hutt’s ‘noble centrepiece’. Almost 60 years later, a seismic, environmental and functional upgrade has preserved the building’s excellent character, including the Council Chambers and north and south façades, while ensuring that it can continue to serve its original purpose.

This facility supplements the existing aquatic centre to create a community hub which caters to a range of sporting and social activities. The need for such a facility became particularly acute after the heavy toll of the Pike River tragedy. Opened in November 2015, the Upper Hutt Railway Station is the long-awaited replacement for the commuter city's main transport hub. The new building is attractive, safe and comfortable, and contains a ticket office, sheltered waiting spaces, public toilets, and additional facilities for staff.
