In contrast to most new schools, which mimic offices or institutional spaces, this building is characterised by its extensive use of timber, imbuing the spaces with warmth and character. The design pushed the limits of new computer-controlled timber milling technology to allow the use of traditional timber joints which are normally thought to be expensive or technically demanding.

When the school’s original 1930’s stone building was deemed to be below seismic standards, its replacement had big boots to fill. The new building includes learning studios that are designed around pedagogical best practice and are already loved by students and staff alike, while the restored original entrance provides a sense of continuity and tradition.

In just 16 months, this new school for 300 pupils was designed and built on a small, terraced site with known contamination issues. The new layout promotes a flexible approach to learning, while an innovative partnership has seen the new school hall built as a shared facility with the Loons Theatre Trust.

This gymnasium complex contains indoor sports facilities, change rooms, offices and a number of teaching spaces. Structural steel above ground is connected to a raft slab bearing which sits on a 3m deep gravel raft foundation. The superstructure has been designed to be lifted and tilted back to level should an earthquake cause any settling.

Only one section of the existing building required replacement, so with careful co-ordination, construction took place between two adjoining and still operational wings of the school. The replaced portion contains eight teaching spaces which are separated by acoustic-rated, removable partitions.

An enclosed courtyard, Te o Marama – Place of Light, provides a central heart to the school, while the dedicated community room welcomes families to participate.
