Encompassing a restaurant and bar on a busy main road, The Waikiwi Tavern & Foundry Restaurant is the third rebuild of suburban bars undertaken during the past decade. Henderson Construction Limited’s Murray Henderson successfully tendered to rebuild the two other bar and restaurants before retiring from the business. His retirement and subsequent passing meant the reins were handed to his son, Brent, who saw the successful tender for The Waikiwi’s construction as not only the continuation of Henderson Construction, but the completion of his father’s legacy.

The KFC brand identity of ‘Always Original’ and ‘Authentic’ inspired from the heritage of Colonel Harland Sanders was the underlying influence on the fitout of KFC's Fort Street restaurant. Existing elements of the 100 plus year old Category B listed building sat well with this brand identity. This was mixed in with a slight ‘industrial urban feel’ that pushes the boundaries in both design and technology. This has future proofed the brand to keep up with ever changing consumer needs.

It represents amplifying existing strengths rather than bowling everything and building big. 194 King Street, Rangiora, was a run down 1960’s building with additions that were not sympathetic to the original build. The team demolished parts of the building and seismically strengthened it, giving the whole project a 21st Century look. The roof was rebuilt, modern parapets added, and a canopy was built around the shops frontage. The interior of the building was divided into four tenancies, three of which are now let.
