Unispace (Architect/Designer/Construction Company)
The HEB Construction project required the development of a shared workspace that brought together both office and site workers in a single location. The design therefore had to accommodate a variety of needs and preferences. The result was a space that is split across two floors and comprises of a range of work settings to support individual, focused and collaborative work. Varied settings also encourage greater integration of both the office and site teams. The design also enabled technology integration to ensure ease of movement between different work modes. Material for the fit-out was selected to represent HEB’s honest, humble and playful culture. In a nod to the global construction group, VINCI Construction’s heritage, French design references were included throughout.
This project started from modest beginnings, with an unattractive rabbit warren of tired and old industrial buildings of varying heights and floor levels, offering minimal natural light. The final build was something quite spectacular. With an inventive design, the original structure has been converted into a set of smart modern offices for the client. The project team has accomplished this incredible result in a very short time frame, all within a modest budget. Unispace should be proud of their smart and inventive work on this project. They are well-deserving winners of the commercial fit out category.
Tonkin + Taylor
With an expiring lease, Tonkin + Taylor was presented with an opportunity to relocate and enhance their workplace. Their new premises were already undergoing refurbishment, which meant the project had to work within the existing upgrade. While this allowed the project team to influence the design of the building to suit the interior space, it also required close collaboration with all parties to achieve project milestones. The completed workplace was open plan and featured enclosed and focus spaces, situated on the floorplan according to activity levels to minimise disruption. Raw and industrial finishes were applied, including the use of polished concrete, steel and plywood. A central café area was developed along with a kitchen and external deck for meal breaks.
BNZ Auckland head office needed to rework its office to suit their Agile Customer and User Experience teams. This provided the challenge of designing a work floor in a way that enabled an effective and agile way of working. The project included a building-wide master plan which ensured the investment was for both current purpose and suitable for any future framework. It also incorporated an aesthetic that represented and respected the local historical context and flavour of Auckland. The design of the space required a large amount of demolition and construction utilising multiple long lead items and specialist finishes. All this work was required to be completed in a fully occupied ‘live’ working office.
This fit out was a refurbishment of an existing building in Kapiti to establish a new non-emergency call centre for the New Zealand Police. The project has been described as one of the best examples of a public service call centre for a Police organisation in the world. Environmentally Sustainable Design was integrated to create a healthy environment for a 24/7 workplace. The refurbishment of an existing building meant that a lot of the existing materials and structure could be repurposed. The design provides a centralised space for team briefings and shift handovers, causing minimal disruption to workflows and call continuity. This fully agile workplace has established a cultural narrative that reflects NZ Police’s core values.
