National Category Winner: Industrial Project: Mainfreight TaurangaEntrantDominion Constructors Project PartnersBSW Architects (Architect/Designer), Dominion Constructors Limited (Construction Company), Dominion Constructors Ltd (Construction Company) Owned ByMainfreight Limited
Mainfreight Tauranga is built with sustainability and the future in mind, installing a 100 KWh solar array, rainwater harvesting, and EV car charging stations. The new facility is situated on a 6.1-hectare site and includes an impressive entry foyer with whale carvings depicting the history of the land.
A major challenge faced was maintaining momentum to complete the project on time during a pandemic as well as constructing a dry pedestrian tunnel beneath the truck breezeway to encourage safe pedestrian movement between the terminal and staff amenity.
The overall scale and size of the freight terminal make this project very prominent in the Tauranga landscape. The team pushed on using innovation in methodology to improve efficiencies in the build and make it more economical and faster to erect. |
Project: Sorted Logistics Stage 4EntrantApollo Projects Project PartnersApollo Projects (Construction Company), GHD (Architect/Designer/Engineer) Owned BySorted Logistics
Apollo Projects completed Stage 4 of the Sorted Logistics development in Christchurch’s Waterloo Business park. This project involved constructing an office and warehouse in the fourth building. The sheer size and scale of this project is one of the most impressive aspects. Strong teamwork and effective collaboration made sure this project was cost-effective and delivered on time.
This build features an efficient structural design, which minimises resource use where possible. It also has a system where stormwater is recycled into aquifers. A portion of the site sits under high-voltage cables, because of this, Apollo had to work through an ongoing management plan for the client, and work in and around the cables during the entirety of the project. |
Project: Talley's ColdstoreEntrantApollo Projects Project PartnersApollo Projects (Construction Company), GHD (Architect/Designer/Engineer) Owned ByTalley’s Ltd
Talley’s Coldstore in Ashburton is one of the largest vegetable processing facilities in New Zealand, as the plant has grown, so has the need for frozen storage. The new build has kept sustainability in mind by installing a refrigeration system that uses ammonia, a very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant.
The build of the coldstore faced some challenges along the way, for example, the team was required to be on site within four months of being engaged to undertake the project, resulting in a tight timeline. The coldstore is also one of the highest in New Zealand, meaning all aspects required considerable work on details, construction methodology, and sequencing. |
Project: Bragato Research Institute Research WineryEntrantScott Construction Marlborough Ltd Project PartnerseCubed Ltd (Greenstar Accredited Professional), Jerram Tocker Barron Architects Limited (Architect/Designer), Scott Construction Marlborough Ltd (Construction Company) Owned ByBragato Research Institute
This building is a world-class research winery, designed to attract and host scientists as well as showcase sustainably. The building features a multi-use conference room which is transparent on two sides, one facing the courtyard, the other to view the winery tank room. The building has been designed and constructed to a green five-star rating, including solar PV, rainwater, and daylight harvesting.
Major challenges included achieving the green star requirements, local supply chain demand and the fast-track nature of the programme. The winery features a highly specialist and unique fit out with 200 winery tanks which allow for the variation in fermenting sizes from 8 liters, 40 liters, and 200 liters. This winery puts New Zealand wine on the world stage with both research and sustainability. |
Project: South Island Dairy - Dry Store and Canning FacilityEntrantD G Archer Construction Ltd Project PartnersArcher Construction (Construction Company), Archer Construction Ltd (Construction Company), HFC Industrial Limited (Architect/Designer/Engineer) Owned ByBlue River Dairy
This project involved the build of a 3200m2 two-story building with a full infant formula canning line. The project consisted of different levels of complexity from the dry storage area being reasonably simple to the canning line area, which was more complex.
The biggest challenge faced was the purchase of a robot to unload dry ingredients which meant changes to the penetrations for the precast panels that were sitting on the beds ready to pour.
A standout feature of this build was the level of finish, required for the strict hygiene requirements. This added another level of intricacy, as the team tried to minimise areas where bacteria and dust could sit. |
Project: Meadow MushroomsEntrantContract Construction Project PartnersCequent Projects (Project Manager), Christiaens Group (Architect/Designer), Contract Construction (Construction Company), Powell Fenwick (Engineer), W2 Limited (Architect/Designer/Engineer) Owned ByMeadow Mushrooms
Meadow Mushrooms are New Zealand’s leading mushroom producer. They have five sites and a team of nearly 500, delivering over 9 million mushrooms to supermarkets, fruit & vegetable stores, foodservice wholesalers, and distributors. The current project included building 18 growing rooms, an annex and plant room, main services, roading, carpark, and demolition of existing growing rooms – the build was carried out over three stages.
A standout challenge was managing the importation of the above-ground materials, which arrived in 100 40-foot containers, as well as working in a live environment. Due to the specialist nature of the buildings, the overseas design and construction company assisted with the project and site supervision, they also trained staff to install the main mechanical system, controls, and watering system. |
Project: The LandingEntrantMacrennie Commercial Construction Limited Project PartnersJWA Architects LTD (Architect/Designer), Macrennie Commercial Construction Ltd (Construction Company), MSC Consulting Group Ltd (Engineer) Owned ByAuckland Airport
The Landing business park, which sits only three minutes from Auckland Airport, is a standout business park due to its world-class design features. It takes into consideration how the build interacts with existing landscapes and surrounding ecological and cultural features, for example, open space located on the headland at the end of Maurice Wilson Avenue and its link to Oruarangi Creek. The landscape design reflects the natural and cultural history of the creek and promotes recreational use.
The build faced a few minor speed bumps along the way, such as installing the exterior cladding face. The tenanted neighboring site was used for access to ensure the work was able to be completed safely. This meant the team had to provide the full work methodology to the neighboring tenant and maintain clear communication throughout the build. |
Project: Oak RoadEntrantCalder Stewart Construction Project PartnersCalder Stewart Construction (Construction Company), Octa Associates Limited (Client Project Manager), Woodhams Meikle Zhan Architects (Architect/Designer) Owned ByChalmers Properties
The Oak Road project comprises high specification warehouses and offices with extensive yards and canopy areas. The glass façade offers the occupants lots of natural light with the benefit of the architectural louvres to give shade.
The warehouse structure comprises of Steltech steel frame, precast panels, and post-tension floor slabs to create a durable and low maintenance warehouse space. Due to the project team’s relationship and ability to rely on each other, issues were solved quickly which enabled the team to complete the project on time. |
Project: Golden Bay Fruit Apple PackhouseEntrantApollo Projects Project PartnersApollo Projects (Construction Company), Flow Consulting (Engineer), GHD (Engineer), Hunt Consulting Group NZ Limited (Project Manager), IKON Architects (Architect/Designer) Owned ByGolden Bay Fruit
This impressive new state-of-the-art facility was developed in three stages, comprising a total floor area of 20,000m² to accommodate eight new coolstores along with an automated packhouse, drive-through canopies, and offices.
The team battled with very poor weather at points during the build, this resulted in wet ground conditions, meaning sacrificial platforms had to be laid to help mitigate the rain. Another difficulty was working by an airport, the contours of the building had to be changed to fit the flightpath and the use of cranes required ongoing consultation with Motueka Airport.
This top-class building matches the modern, sophisticated technology being used inside it perfectly. Tt is likely the largest packhouse in New Zealand. It houses a loading dock, offices, two large canopies, and a packing area with mezzanines. |
