The Christchurch Central Methodist Parish has embraced a bold new design to replace their heritage church building which was irreparably damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes. The project presented many challenges and regular planning sessions were held to manage the intricate design of the building and mitigation of damage and potential for cracking.
The Chapel wall is elliptical with curved skylights and a sloping roof. The building includes the integration of Bluestone cladding and a set of 140-year-old doors from the original church. Everything from the foundations to the steel structure and double timber-framed walls had to be built to very stringent tolerances to achieve a symmetrical curvature to form the consistency of the ellipse both internally and externally. |

O'Brien Construction kept sustainability at the forefront of their minds during this build, the Cascade Pools were designed and built with no holding tanks, making them extremely water efficient.
The new Cascade Pools were made to look as natural as possible, this was achieved using huge riverstone boulders, bluestone waterfalls, and multi-levels to create cascading water flow, like a natural river. The fiberglass hydro slide was fabricated in Canada which meant a huge amount of collaboration was required at the design phase between the design team and the Canadian suppliers.
Constructing the pools on driven timber piles was difficult at times, especially as the team had to protect surrounding Redwood tree roots. Working with Riverstone boulders also presented some challenges as a selection process was imperative to achieve the client’s vision. |

This new complex boasts five hot saltwater pools, a cold-water plunge pool, sauna rooms, changing and toilet facilities, cafe areas, and first aid and staff facilities. The landscaping has been designed to bring harmony to the complex and provide a user-friendly space.
The project was constructed on the beach, so ground conditions and strong easterly winds, carrying airborne sand, were challenging. To mitigate this, the project was built in stages. Each of the pools were enclosed in a canopy and isolated so that the harsh conditions did not affect the quality of the finished product.
The pools are architecturally striking with great use of exposed timber detailing and stunning landscaping. It is also sloped away from the beach to minimise heat loss from wind travelling across the pools. It integrates beautifully into the environment, incorporating stunning sea views. |

The new SwimTastic facility has an area of approximately 2,000m2 comprising of two 25m Myrtha training swimming pools imported from Italy, changing rooms, offices, and staff amenities in addition to plant rooms housing the filtration equipment and mechanical ventilation.
The biggest challenge for the team was discovering asbestos in the ground, despite several years of testing suggesting the site was clean. They worked closely with the local Council to decontaminate the site.
A highly efficient HVAC system has contributed to a significant reduction in carbon emissions, a retention tank also collects rainwater and uses it to top up the balance tank, which replaces water that is lost through evaporation and patrons leaving the pools. |

The Lakehouse is the center of the community at Olive Estate Lifestyle Village, a place where residents and the wider community can meet, relax, and socialise. The café features a vaulted ceiling with exposed timber and steel trusses, with French bi-fold doors from the café a seamless indoor-outdoor flow is created to fit the meticulously landscaped courtyard and lawns.
The Lakehouse was a highly complex build of mostly pre-nail timber frame and trusses (truncated) that required a high degree of accuracy and superior craftsmanship. Other challenges included the pool ventilation system which was integrated into the water run-off channel surrounding the pool.
A highlight of the build is the overall scale which has been disguised through the clever use of variation in form, materials, and textures. |

This project involved the refurbishment of the old Takapuna RSA building into a new state-of-the-art youth hub, with students involved in the co-creation of the space. Shore Junction is designed for young people to connect, collaborate, and grow.
Community donations and contributions made it possible for the hub to be equipped with both technical and creative features. The building hosts a range of sensory-stimulating features, from the Espan wall cladding, industrial-inspired exposed tray deck, and air conditioning ducting.
Incorporating various textures and finishes was a challenging task. This included merging new and modern features with the existing heritage of the space. From revived concrete walls, repurposed wood, and exposed metal showcased in the ceiling, the interior portrays a modern feel with hints of what the building was before. |
Project: Te Matapihi Bulls Community CentreEntrantW & W Construction 2010 Limited Project PartnersArchitecture Workshop (Architect/Designer), W & W Construction 2010 Limited (Construction Company) The Te Matapihi Bulls Community Centre was designed to become a landmark structure for Bulls, and bring all the town’s main council facilities under one roof.
The building provides a heart for the town, a place in which to gather – whether it be in the intimate space of the library, through regular school events in the town hall, or their combined use for larger festivals. The public meeting rooms on the third level also provide a means for visitors to orientate to the river and surrounding country.
Standout features are the Carapace, constructed out of the aluminum section, and the internal spiral staircase from the ground floor to the top and painted in a bold blue. |

The Majestic Church project was an extensive complete renovation of an existing building complex in the heart of Christchurch city with a gross floor area of 1740m2. The original Majestic Church needed to be demolished following the devastating 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
The construction phase was split between two phases; structural strengthening and enabling works, and the main construction of the church. The lighting of the façade provides a vibrant identity for the Majestic space, while a key feature in the main lobby is the large, suspended copper air conditioning duct.
The team enjoyed the challenge of working with some unique specified materials, taking care of the construction, and finishing throughout the building. A highlight of the project was the strong collaborative bond developed between the Calder Stewart Site Manager and the Senior Architect. |

After assisting with some budget advice, Jacob Projects was engaged to construct this large bespoke auditorium for Tuvalu Christian Church. Featuring large, curved timber beams and extensive carpentry work throughout, this project highlights what can be achieved when everyone works together collaboratively.
The build is unique in terms of the scale of timber construction. 14m high glulam beams provide the main structure with hyspan rafters used throughout. The structure, envelope, and connection details are all custom-designed.
The biggest challenge Jacobson Projects faced was managing significant design coordination issues. Delivering this project within budget and near to original timeframes, despite significant design delays, was a massive achievement. |

The All Blacks Experience is a partnership between New Zealand Rugby and Ngai Tahu Tourism which is designed to showcase the All Blacks and Black Ferns.
The project was an internal retrofit, covering an area of 4,000m2 on the fourth floor of the SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland. Before starting the fit-out, Naylor Love completed extensive service alteration works to bring the building up to current New Zealand standards.
The All Blacks Experience is designed to provide a full sensory, interactive, and immersive experience. The acoustic performance of the speakers, programmable lighting, sequenced sliding door operations and room temperature differential played a huge role in tying the build together. |
