The MRI Replacement project at Whanganui Hospital delivered a modern, patient-focused facility while overcoming significant logistical challenges. Located on the 1st floor of a live hospital environment, the project required structural support transfer to the basement and the installation of a roof hatch for machine placement. A solution-focused approach, proactive collaboration, and robust stakeholder engagement were critical to its success, enabling early handover and minimal disruption to hospital operations. The facility now features a modern layout, improved accessibility, and a larger scanner for claustrophobic patients, reducing travel and enhancing patient care.

The 4,500-square-metre expansion of Ormiston Hospital nearly doubles its footprint, delivering a modern healthcare facility equipped to meet growing community needs. The new wing includes an endoscopy suite with three procedure rooms, consulting spaces, and 15 additional patient beds, seamlessly linked to the existing hospital via a purpose-built bridge. Constructed in a live hospital environment, the project required precise planning to maintain uninterrupted operations, ensure safe access for staff and patients, and minimise noise, dust, and vibration disruption. Despite severe weather and cyclone-related delays during foundation works, an accelerated programme kept the project on track. The result is a future-ready facility that enhances Ormiston Hospital’s capacity and care delivery.

This purpose-built facility replaces an outdated centre, providing a modern, patient-focused rehabilitation space tailored for amputees. Sustainability was a core consideration, with a mass timber structure incorporating Cross- Laminated Timber walls, Glulam beams, and a Parallel Laminated Panels roof, sequestering over 315,000kg of carbon. Designed in close consultation with amputees and staff, the facility enhances rehabilitation services while embodying Peke Waihanga’s cultural philosophy, founded upon the Legend of Tane. A stylised tree feature in the reception area symbolises this connection, serving as a powerful metaphor for strength and resilience.

Set in the heart of Redcliffs Village, the Redcliffs Medical Centre by Johnstone Callaghan Architects was designed with community, longevity, and wellbeing in mind. Developed for long-term ownership by the medical team, the building delivers a modern healthcare environment while honouring the character of the original site. The street- facing pharmacy remains housed in the existing structure, while the main medical areas are behind it in a striking black brick building. Raising the floor level by 1.2 metres to mitigate coastal flood risk introduced challenges around accessibility and street interaction. At the same time the narrow site demanded detailed structural solutions for fire safety. Extensive collaboration with the council and community ensured the building integrated safely and seamlessly with the neighbouring Coastal Pathway.

The Te Kaika Wellbeing Hub is an integrated health and social services facility designed to support Maori, Pasifika, and low-income families across Otago. A collaborative effort between Te Kaika, the Ministry of Social Development, and Te Whatu Ora Southern, the hub delivers comprehensive, wraparound care in a culturally inclusive and welcoming environment. The development includes a 2,166-square-metre wellbeing hub and a 1,400-square-metre overcroft car park. Delivered through a design and build model, the project overcame pandemic disruptions, complex ground conditions, and phased consenting through early contractor involvement, BIM technology, and prefabrication. The in-house BIM team modelled key building elements, allowing specialist consultants and subcontractors to contribute meaningfully during design and construction, improving coordination and outcomes. A rib-and-infill floor system reduced work at height, improving safety and construction efficiency.

This complex hospital refurbishment supports 125 staff processing over 5,000 tests daily and required careful planning to ensure uninterrupted 24/7 operations. The team delivered seismic upgrades, reconfigured lab layouts, and introduced pressurised lobbies and automatic doors. Delivered in five carefully staged phases, the project enabled essential lab functions to continue seamlessly. Operating under high-risk protocols, the team successfully mitigated dust, noise, and vibration without disrupting hospital services. Fosters’ innovative noise control plan, developed for this project, has since been adopted nationally by Te Whatu Ora – Health NZ, setting a new benchmark for healthcare construction.

Ward 22 at Middlemore Hospital is a secure, therapeutic environment tailored to support older adults with acute mental health needs. Located in Building 31 within the Counties Manukau Middlemore Hospital complex, the redeveloped ward now features 17 patient bedrooms, activity rooms, ensuite bathrooms, clinical spaces, and open-plan areas designed to provide clear sightlines for staff and patient safety. The redevelopment prioritised anti-ligature design, with exceptional precision, door hinges and electrical fittings were engineered to a 0.5mm tolerance to reduce self-harm risks. Works included a full interior strip-out and rebuild, exterior landscaping, bathroom extension, and repairs to cladding and roofing. Operating within a live hospital setting added complexity, particularly with frequent helicopter landings, some with less than 30 minutes notice, requiring coordinated proximity clearance by the site team.

This pioneering project delivered a relocatable, 450-square-metre hospital ward to support Wellington Hospital’s growing need for clinical space, creating a 12-bed decant ward. Constructed offsite in a controlled warehouse environment, eight prefabricated pods were transported overnight and craned into place atop the hospital, all while ensuring uninterrupted theatre operations directly below. BIM technology enabled precise coordination, early clash detection, and careful planning to meet tight weight and dimension constraints. With the NICU located nearby, strict noise control and infection prevention protocols were essential. This innovative, highly coordinated approach sets a precedent for prefabricated healthcare infrastructure in New Zealand.
