Naylor Love was tasked with the challenge of constructing a new Chapel of St Bede and strengthening and extending the existing Performing Arts Centre. The new Chapel replaced a temporary facility, which had been used since the 2011 earthquakes and provided the school with a place of worship. Incorporated into the new Chapel are the original stained-glass windows from the demolished Chapel. Effort was made to seamlessly incorporate the school’s existing fixtures and fittings such as the organ, stations of the cross, pews, altar, statues, bell and wood carvings. The team’s seismic strengthening of the Performing Arts Centre successfully returned it to its original functionality. The extension included a kitchen, servery and large foyer with and an outdoor deck area.

Whanganui Collegiate School was founded in 1854 and is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious secondary schools. Its campus buildings are a nationally important collection of twentieth-century architectural styles. The new administration building is the main architectural event of Whanganui Collegiate School, sitting on an elevated platform overlooking the number one sports ground. The building comprises of multiple entrances with a main visitor entrance that boasts a double-height glass door in the atrium. Clever thinking went into the design of the brick feature walls and the structural form flowing from the outside in. The building also comprises of three structural portals that link the two facades together.

This was the second stage of a wider campus master plan revamping Medbury School. It saw the development of a new teaching block which was designed to meet the needs of a modern learning environment. It offers flexible spaces for adaptability and various learning tasks. The team faced various challenges during the 12-month project with regards to safety, particularly working within the school while it was operating. The building design and structural system was also complex, with different integrations and materials used. A key feature is the school’s values debossed on a two-storey high feature wall in the main entry. Overall, the level of architectural detailing and finishing of the teaching block is standout.

University of Waikato

Hawkins was engaged to construct a new University of Waikato Tauranga Campus. The brief required that the campus accommodates for teaching capacity of around 1,500 students and staff. The develop campus consisted of two buildings linked internally by sky bridges and a common area at level one. The north section of the building is four levels high and the south section compromises of six levels, including a basement. The project was developed in line with the vision for the campus to provide a home for the University. The new campus successfully honours its location and connections to iwi, its founders, Tauranga city, and the wider Bay of Plenty region.

Project: Baradene College Hockey Field & Music Suite

The Baradene College Hockey Field & Music Suite project consists of the construction of a new 143 on grade car parking level. This had to be partially excavated into an existing grassed area below the new hockey turf level. The team successfully developed an elevated field with hydro-turf features including heating, fencing and lighting. Alongside the field is a music suite and classroom facility. This includes music practice suites, a music lounge and stage area. A huge challenge was developing and completing the project while the school was operating normal hours.

With one existing building on site, this new classroom provides an open-plan learning environment. The building flows between indoor and outdoor areas as well as tying into the adjacent building. The architecture and design established an environment that children can engage and evolve with through creativity. The new classroom has a residential scale and materiality to fit with the local and existing preschool context, while also providing the children with a space that felt like home. Timeframe and technical layout were the two major challenges of this project – but the finished result was outstanding.

The Beatrice Tinsley building provides teaching space and offices as part of the wider regional science and innovation centre development onsite. The building is an innovative new build and the first of its kind for multi-level timber construction in New Zealand. The post-tensioned, seismic damage resistant LVL system used in the build is a patented technology developed by University of Canterbury engineering professors. The project involved the removal of a significant amount of asbestos and demolition of the existing building on site, utilising the existing basement and slab to then construct the hybrid timber structure. The project was completed within a live University environment and required detailed and meticulous planning across the multiple stages and facets of the construction.
