The Gardens Primary School, built in 2002, was found to have weather-tightness and other significant property issues. A completely new school was designed and constructed, whilst staff and students relocated to temporary pre-fabricated classrooms located on the sports field. The new school offers pupils an “all-in-one” teaching environment with open plan learning communities and technology spaces, as well as the requisite administration, library, media and gymnasium facilities. The design supports this learning style nicely, with large open voids containing stairwells and visual links across the three levels.
Originally this project was to rebuild and repair a leaky school. However, it became evident that it was not going to be a cost-effective solution. Therefore, a completely new school was designed and constructed, all while staff and students relocated to temporary pre-fabricated classrooms located on the sports field. Judges were impressed with the relationship that was formed with numerous stakeholders, including the local community. They were also impressed with how the project team managed working in a residential area, with strict working hours and robust control measures for noise and dust. The sloping site required significant excavation and retaining walls to create a level building platform. Precast concrete elements, including wall panels and double tee flooring were utilised to ensure the success of the build. Judges were impressed that the project team overcame their challenges, on an extremely tight budget, and were able to deliver the project in just 17 months. The result is an exceptional open plan learning environment reflective of the community’s expectations.

The Spreydon School BIM Pilot Project was the first of its kind for the Ministry of Education. It acted as a test project for the use of BIM in the design and construction of schools. The main construction aspect was the two new learning hubs. These were modern learning hubs with numerous break out spaces. An exisiting administration building and attached gymnasium/hall were also renovated. In addition to extensive renovation of the ground floor, the existing attic space was converted into a staffroom, with stairs and new lift.

The Christchurch Girls High School Performing Arts Centre building is a purpose-built facility that replaced the existing building. The former Centre suffered significant earthquake damage and was demolished. The new Performing Arts Centre building contains two levels of teaching spaces, which wrap around the north and west sides, administration spaces to the southern side and a 275 person theatre with associated performance spaces to the eastern side. The theatre area is wrapped with concrete panels and large concrete bleachers, that form the seats. This provides premium acoustic performance and sound separation from the adjacent teaching spaces.

New Shoots Children Centres
Whenuapai's New Shoots Childrens Centre is a playful and vibrant Early Learning Centre. The centre caters for 90 children, and features spacious, open-plan classrooms that connect directly to outdoor playgrounds. A highlight of the centre is the twisting timber walkway which leads people along the building to the entrance. This dynamic space connects indoor classrooms with outdoor playgrounds. The design is a playful take on the classic childrens game of hide and seek, where the revolving glulam structure creates spaces in which children can play, hide and explore.
