Te Raekura Redcliffs School
Te Raekura Redcliffs School opened in June 2020 after almost nine years at a temporary site following the Canterbury earthquakes. The new campus includes 13 teaching spaces, administration areas, a library, a multipurpose hall, and playgrounds. The new school contains wool wall insulation and PV panels. It also features CarboNZero certified and NZ recyclable interface carpet tiles. A stand-out feature is an integration of playscapes throughout the school grounds rather than being just in isolated playgrounds. Cubby holes are also set into the vertical face of the decking to provide quieter ‘chill out’ play spaces for kids. Key challenges included difficult site conditions, such as liquefaction, lateral spread, flood plain, coastal inundation zone, in-ground tanks, and contamination.
Te Raekura Redcliffs has demonstrated exceptional value for money over the course of its development. The school received a significant pay-out from its insurers after the Christchurch earthquake, enabling it to create facilities beyond what they would have otherwise been able to do. Despite being one of the most significant archaeological sites in the country, the construction team worked with the school, consultants, and neighbours to deliver a fantastic space. The school community, which has been displaced for the past few years, is now making the most out of a modern learning environment.

The rebuild of Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School is the ultimate state-of-the-art learning environment. The project team considered environmentally sustainable design throughout the whole process, using environmentally considered material and inserting extensive energy conservation features. The key to success in this project was early contractor involvement, it made responding to challenges, which required the entire project team, much more efficient. It also meant the team worked well together to achieve a fantastic result. The schools have been designed with an approach to learning that emphasises community, collaboration, and connectivity in all aspects of school life. The variety of breakout spaces, from small, medium, and large, enable a range of teaching activities to take place.

The new Wellington East Girl’s College Main Block consists of three new multi-story buildings across a footprint of 2,060m2. The new build combines historical aspects of the building with exciting new features. A standout aspect includes the Sto plastered aluminum cladding, and terracotta façade tiles imported from Italy. A 600mm shear wall was added behind the façade whilst the remainder of the structure consists of structural steel beams and concrete-filled columns. The project was full of challenging surprises, including asbestos, which was found within demolished buildings and underground pipes, lead paint removal was also needed for more than 2,000m2 of façade. Due to the proximity to the school, the removal of these chemicals had to be fully contained.

St Johns College’s roll has seen major growth in the last few years. As a result, this Hamilton Catholic Diocese sought to create a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility. The new complex includes a range of facilities such as an international grade basketball court, weights room, and new classrooms. Some standout aspects include the Junkers high performing sports flooring, which is known for its sustainability and ingenuity fabrication. Another highlight of this project was the builder’s ability to reinforce the school’s special character values within the new complex through simplicity, style, and functionality. A key challenge to overcome was building around a treasured Pohutukawa tree located within (5m) of the building platform.
