Evolution Healthcare
Royston Day Surgery is a purpose-built facility that enriches the healthcare landscape in the Hawke’s Bay. It offers state-of-the-art orthopaedic care, including advanced operating theatres, recovery areas, and support services. The build is patient-centric, with plenty of natural light, and includes sustainability features, such as insulated precast walls for structural stability and energy efficiency. Despite being located within the hospital campus and facing logistical challenges such as partial road closures, Alexander Construction ensured minimal disruption. Additionally, the decision to construct the orthopaedic theatre as a standalone building rather than within the existing hospital complex was made swiftly, demonstrating Alexander Construction’s flexibility and commitment to the client's needs.
The Royston Day Surgery was designed for patient comfort and modern healthcare. This is clear throughout the structure, which has been built for a seamless, circular patient journey. On arrival, patients transition through a welcoming reception and pre-surgery waiting and examination rooms before moving on to operating theatres and finishing in recovery areas. The team's attention to detail is evident in both the patient-facing areas and the less visible 'back of house' spaces. Advanced technologies are integrated throughout the facility to enhance operational efficiency and safety, including 'Airframe' air filtration systems in the operating theatres, ensuring a sterile environment in the surgical area. This thoughtful design and integration of technology establishes Royston Day Surgery as a leading modern surgical care facility.

The Cancer Society Canterbury West Coast
The new Canterbury Cancer Centre offers comprehensive recovery support and replaces the facility that was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake. The new centre features an office admin area, reception, function room, and 50 rooms for cancer recovery. The project faced numerous setbacks that were overcome by the Cook Brothers Construction team, including the COVID-19 pandemic which presented significant workforce challenges. To mitigate delays, the team re-sequenced tasks and utilised existing resources where possible. The centre’s design features, including three-level pre-cast panels and a smart passive fire system, demonstrate remarkable construction ingenuity. Sustainability was incorporated throughout, with material repurposing, reducing waste, and adopting eco-friendly methods.

Te Whatu Ora (formerly West Coast District Health
The Buller Health Centre has been designed to fully replace the existing, dated Buller Hospital in Westport. With a focus on local engagement and sustainability, the centre provides comprehensive health services for the community. During the build, the Scott Construction team faced many challenges, including remote location logistics, harsh weather, and two major floods. This meant the project required strategic planning, community engagement, and innovative responses, such as transforming an old nurses' building into temporary accommodation to contribute to the community's flood recovery efforts. The completion of the health centre signifies a significant boost to local infrastructure, achieved through adaptive planning and a collaborative effort against unforeseen circumstances.

Harbour Cancer & Wellness
Harbour Cancer Treatment Specialists wanted to expand their facilities and create a larger second site in Newmarket, Auckland. The new centre is split into two areas: a treatment facility and a wellness-rehabilitation area, including a gym, physio, massage, and therapy consult rooms. The design prioritises the patient's journey, with separate access points for each area, ensuring patient privacy while also allowing them to mentally separate the experiences of treatment and recovery. The chosen colour palette and materials foster a sense of calm and comfort, with oak and soft pastel colours distinguishing Harbour Cancer from traditional medical spaces and contributing to a more positive patient experience. This project required meticulous planning and adaptability, highlighting Unispace's expertise.
