Te Omanga Hospice Foundation
Te Omanga Hospice supports the Hutt Valley with palliative and respite care for the local community. The hospice was found to be earthquake-prone after the 2013 Seddon earthquake. While the hospice was unscathed by the November 2016 quake, a decision was made to demolish the existing Hospice building and replace it with a new $8 million facility. The new facility provided a host of new features. This included eight new care beds with ensuites, including two bariatric suits. An office space was built for clinical staff. The facility also included double glazing, glulam portals, Acoustic Decotech panelling and external cedar cladding. The existing cottage and bird aviary were relocated back on to the site.
If you were looking for a project which is a true community, you wouldn’t go any further than the new purpose-built Te Omanga Hospice, in Hutt Valley. The site was constrained due to tree protection and boundary lines. However, a C shaped hospice building with 8 care beds, lounges, kitchen facilities, and an administration area was designed with considerable staff involvement. The buildings design and ability to provide privacy, both internally from circulation areas, and external settled areas, was challenging, but the end result is a credit to all. The grounds were developed by locals, completing the complex and creating a quiet setting, well back off the busy road. This is a most worthy winner of this category.

Southern Cross Hospitals partnered with a group of orthopaedic surgeons in a joint venture for the construction of a state-of-the-art day stay hospital in Milford on Auckland’s North Shore. The new three-storey building was built to cater for the rise in demand for high-quality orthopaedic surgery services on the North Shore. The new hospital and clinic specialises in performing keyhole orthopaedic operations, utilising the very latest surgical techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to provide improved outcomes and reduced wait and recovery times for patients. The completed facility opened with two dedicated operating theatres, catering for short stay orthopaedic surgical procedures.

This project involved the renovation of the existing Spinal Unit at Burwood Hospital and the addition of new facilities. This included building staff areas and new bedrooms that necessitated a complete renovation of the existing bedrooms. Ceiling mounted lifts were also installed for lifting patients. Renovation of the existing building revealed numerous unforeseen obstacles, such as unprotected penetrations through fire separations and inadequate existing infrastructure. This required replacement of water heaters, medical gas pipes and blocked HVAC ducting. All patients and staff had to be temporarily relocated to another part of the hospital. Managing this relocation added another challenge to the project, which already required a very high level of cooperation and coordination between the client and the contractor.
