The VisyBoard Hamilton project is a $100m investment in a new cardboard manufacturing facility. The facility is a highly automated process requiring minimal human intervention in the manufacturing process. The project was a 36,000m2 shed, with a 2,000m2 mezzanine and 900m2 of office and staff facilities. Challenges with the land meant that two months were lost from an already tight project timeline. However, the original timeframe was met through excellent decision making by Visy, and planning and hard work by Fosters.

Judges comments

Visy Board Hamilton is a new cardboard factory that contains some of the world’s most modern technology. This project involved building a 36,000m2 shed, with a 2,000m2 mezzanine and 900m2 of office and staff facilities. Construction began in the middle of winter, which is the most difficult time to start excavation.

Challenges with the land meant that the project team were delayed by two months - on an already tight timeline. The only way the build could be successfully achieved was with a capable and well-resourced project team and with clients who could quickly respond to the time pressures.

Judges remarked that the factory had to accommodate large machines – the largest machine used was 135m – which is longer than a rugby field. The whole concrete floor had to be specifically designed for this and other similar machines.

Judges said the result is a remarkable feat, and testament to the team’s planning and hard work – as the building was constructed in an extraordinarily short timeframe. The judges were impressed with the excellent decision making and collaboration with client, consultant and construction team.

Originally envisioned as an inconspicuous ‘farm building’ the Hawaiki Cable Landing Station is now a dramatic architectural feature on Mangawhai Heads. The building blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, forming the perfect balance of beauty without prominence. Don’t be fooled by its appearance as a luxury beach house, the inside of the building is anything but standard. It houses a bespoke electrical, telco, industrial and civil solution to land the undersea internet cable that improves the speed and reliability of New Zealand’s internet.

Project: Singh Dairy Barn

Calder Stewart Construction

Project Partners

Calder Stewart Construction Ltd (Construction Company), Meyer Cruden Engineering Ltd (Engineer)

The Singh Dairy Barn shows how excellence in industrial design and construction leads to exceptionally happy dairy cows, and a significant lift in farm production. Calder Stewart Construction and GEA Farm Technologies undertook a Design-Build project to create a world-class dairy barn system in Gordonton, Waikato, for third generation dairy farmer Aman Singh. The resulting industrial building, and shift from a traditional pastoral grazing system to a ‘cut-and-carry’ for feed, enabled a lift in on-farm cow numbers from 600 to 1,000, along with an impressive lift in per-cow output of 10-15%.
