The Tiaho Acute Mental Health Unit is the first of its kind marking a step towards change in mental health design in New Zealand – from its co-design approach to salutogenic design principles and cultural capability. Stage one was completed and opened in 2018, with the second stage opening in September 2020. The project placed great focus on a collaborative co-design effort. It was essential that the building was built to ensure the best possible outcome for the service users, whanau, and clinical staff. The second stage comprised a single-story clinical and residential unit, featuring 38 residential rooms. The complex services in this building were a challenge to build. There are rooms where each water source in the ensuite can be individually switched off remotely from the room, these services are designed with patient safety in mind.

Judges comments

This building reflects the importance of changes in mental health treatment in New Zealand, with positive results in patient behaviour being observed since completion. The building is based on recent international innovations and is tailored to the unit’s specific needs in Manukau and its wider catchment. The judges were impressed by the collaboration of everyone in the project, in particular the client for allowing staff involvement, which helped deliver a world-leading mental health facility. The Hawkins team delivered the project two weeks ahead of schedule and achieved an exceptional level of quality, which included several sustainability features. While the contractor faced several challenges including budget issues, services complexity, and a four-week site closure due to COVID-19, the biggest challenge was working near an operational mental health facility.

The Christchurch Hospital Waipapa building has been five years in the making, the new building spans 62,000m2 over 12 stories. It has been built to meet standard sustainability efficiencies including 100% LED lighting throughout and fuel diversification to biomass steam. The project team responded to COVID-19 exceptionally by accelerating the handover date of the ICU, Emergency Department (ED), and Radiology Department. The new build features a seismic design to ensure resilience to earthquakes and “Pandemic Mode”. This includes two or three wards having the capability to operate in isolation with 100% fresh air and increased extraction rates to actively contain air-borne containments and discharge them externally.

Eyes and Eyelids

ASC Architects were commissioned to design a new boutique eye clinic for providing specialist ophthalmic care and cataract surgery. Due to a limited lease agreement between the parish and the client an interesting constraint of the brief was that the building needed to be easily relocatable to another site. In response to this, the building was designed as three separate modules that fitted together to complete the single building. Timing constraints, which were established during the design phase, locked in a tight critical path that needed to be met to design, consent, tender, and complete construction of the building in the timeframe required. This required the entire project team to work well together to achieve a successful end result.
